Attendance Policy

1.     ATTENDANCE:  Students who miss class for any reason other than a school function, Independent Study, or a verifiable reason as listed below, are subject to the loss of credit as well as the reduction of grades. Students with an excused absence are required to make up all work missed. The California Ed. Code lists the following eight reasons as the only reasons for excused absences.

a.     Due to the student’s illness

b.     Due to quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer

c.     For the purpose of having a medical, dental, optometrical, or chiropractic service rendered

d.     For the purpose of attending the funeral services of a member of his or her immediate family, so long as the absence is not more than one day if the service is conducted in California and not more than three days if the service is conducted outside of California

e.     For the purpose of jury duty in the manner provided for by law

f.      Due to the illness or medical appointment during school hours of a child of whom the pupil is the custodial parent

g.     For justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral service, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, attendance at an employment conference, or attendance at an educational conference on the legislative or judicial process offered by a nonprofit organization when the pupil’s absence is requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or a designated representative pursuant to uniform standards established by the governing board

h.     For the purpose of serving as a member of a precinct board for an election pursuant to Section 12302 of the Elections Code


A pupil absent from school under this section shall be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence that can be reasonably provided and, upon satisfactory completion within a reasonable period of time, shall be given full credit. The teacher of the class from which a pupil is absent shall determine which tests and assignments shall be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, the tests and assignments that the pupil missed during the absence.

For purposes of this section, attendance at religious retreats shall not exceed four hours per semester

The school reserves the right to require independent verification of the reason for absences regardless of the age of the student or the length of the absence.

All absences other than those listed in 1-8 above will be considered unexcused and the student will be subject to disciplinary action.

2.     MAKE UP & CREDIT:Students who miss class for any of the above reasons will be offered a chance to make up work missed. AT THE TEACHER’S DISCRETION, MAKEUP WORK WILL BE IN ADDITION TO THE WORK DONE BY OTHER STUDENTS IN THE CLASS. Students must follow the procedures below in order to not be penalized for the absence.

a.     The student checks into the attendance office immediately upon returning to school.

b.     The student has in their possession when they check in a note verifying that the absence was for one of the reason listed in Part 1, Sections “a” through “h” above.

c.     The student turns in all required make up work in addition to homework when it is due. As a general rule, students will be given one day to make up the work missed in one day, two days for a two day absence, etc. In case of extended absences, parents or students should contact the school to make special arrangements for make up.


3.     LOSS OF CREDIT:Students who miss classes for any reasons, other than the above, or fail to satisfactorily complete the make up work will be given an UNEXCUSED absence and will be subject to a loss of credit, a lowering of their academic grade and possible disciplinary action.

4.     SUSPENSIONS:Students who are suspended will be given an UNEXCUSED absence and will be subject to a loss of credit and/or a lowering of their academic grade.


No student shall be excused from school during regular school hours, which includes break, without a written NOTE or verbal permission from the parent or guardian. Students must sign out through the office.

If a student becomes ill at school and the parent cannot be reached, school personnel will take care of the ill student.  If the illness becomes severe, a doctor will be contacted.


A student who is in attendance for any part of a school day is responsible for submitting work due in any and all classes on the students' schedule that day.


Tardiness will affect grades.  Students may be assigned detention for tardiness.  30 minutes will be assigned for tardiness during the first 10 minutes of class, and 60 minutes for tardiness after 10 minutes late and 90 minutes for any cut.


Students may be assigned detention for misbehavior, tardiness, or truancy.


Repeated truancy and/or other disciplinary problems will result in a referral to the School Attendance Review Board. The school will monitor all SARB contracts.


The athlete must be in full attendance on the day before and on the day of a game.  If an athlete does not attend all classes on both days, he/she will not attend or play in the game.  For Saturday games, a student must be in attendance in all classes on Friday.

Funerals, dental appointments, religious activities, and doctor’s appointments are possible exceptions, subject to the interpretation by the administration.

Disciplinary Action:The athlete is expected to arrive on time for practice.  If an athlete is late to practice or has an unexcused absence or tardy, he/she may be subject to disciplinary action.

Detention Policy

Students are given detention for reasons such as disrespectful behavior or excessive tardies, etc. Students who have to serve a detention after school can make it easy upon themselves by choosing to accept the responsibility, and then just showing up and serving it. Detentions are served with the staff or with me. The student is given the choice to make arrangements with the staff member they want to serve with, or they can go to the assigned staff room at the designated time.

When a student chooses to neglect their responsibility they are choosing to not take part in any extra-curricular activities. We call this being on the NO GO List. Athletes cannot practice nor play in games until their hours are completed. Non-athlete students are not allowed at games, dances, etc… Students may choose to exchange their detention hours for on campus suspension or Community Service. They will earn twice the number of hours served when completing successful Community Service.

Community Service comes in many forms. Students may help neighbors around the house, at parks, for the housing district or they may clean up trash around the school grounds. They can choose to tutor a younger student or give a presentation to their classmates. Hours are awarded only when a completed form is returned. You can find a copy of the form here

Internet Acceptable Use Agreement (Student)

The network is provided for students to conduct research, complete assignments,and communicate with others. The following is an Acceptable Use Agreement that covers six conditions or facets of being a Digital Citizen. Please read and sign this agreement so that you can enjoy this privilege.1. Respect Yourself. I will show respect for myself through my actions. I will select online names that are appropriate and not use false identities. I will consider the information and images that I post online. I will consider what personal information about my life, experiences,experimentation or relationships I post. I will not be obscene.2. Protect Yourself. I will ensure that the information, images and materials I post online will not put me at risk. I will not publish my personal details, contact details, or a schedule of my activities. I will report any attacks or inappropriate behavior directed at me. I will not visit sites that are degrading, pornographic, racist or inappropriate.3. Respect Others. I will show respect for others. Email and Skype addresses, contact details, cell numbers)5. Respect Intellectual/Physical property. I will not plagiarize the work of others, suitably citing any and all use of websites, books, media, etc. I will validate information. I will use and abide by the Fair Use rules and will request permission to use the materials of others. I will use the school’s computers, software, and other technology equipment with care and encourage others to do the same.6. Protect Intellectual Property. I will request to use the software and media others produce. Iwill use free and open source alternatives rather than pirating software. I will purchase, licensed register all software. I will purchase my music and media, and refrain from distributing these in a manner that violates their licenses. I will act with integrity.By signing this agreement, I undertake to always act in a manner that is respectful to myself and others, to act appropriately in a moral and ethical manner. I agree to follow the principles of digital citizenship outlined in this agreement and accept that failing to follow these tenets will have consequences. Definition of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is using others' words without giving credit (citing the source).

This includes ideas, opinions, facts, statistics, paraphrases, and summaries, whether the original words were spoken or written, unless they are common knowledge (widely known and documented).

How to Avoid Plagiarism

Cite the source of any information that is not your own original idea or not common knowledge.

Use quotes for any phrases that come directly from text.


1st Offense:        Minimum - Refusal to accept the assignment/work

Maximum - Grade of - 0 - on the assignment/work and "U" grade in citizenship.

2nd Offense:       Defined as cheating (see cheating in Student Handbook )

Happy Camp High School Dress Code

All students are expected to adhere to common practices of modesty, cleanliness, and neatness; to dress in a respectful manner within the acceptable standards of the community and in such a manner as to contribute to the academic atmosphere, not detract from it. Students who fail to comply with this dress code may be sent home and be subject to disciplinary actions. 

All footwear is acceptable except steel-toed boots and slippers. Students in P.E. and shop classes must wear footwear that is appropriate for active participation and safety. 

Clothing should fit appropriately and shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments when the student is sitting, standing, or raising their arms. The length of the skirt, dress, or shorts must be at least 2 inches above the knee, and if shorter must be worn with knee length leggings. Manufactures bootcut slits are acceptable. 

Halter-tops, crop tops, strapless dresses, tube tops, mesh shirts, sheer blouses, muscle shirts, half shirts, and men’s sleeveless undershirts are not appropriate for school. Shirts and blouses must cover undergarments, back, abdomen, and cleavage. Pajamas as flannel pants are inappropriate. Sheer skirts and dresses are also not acceptable! 

Any attire/paraphernalia/symbol that signifies gang affiliation will not be allowed on campus. Any attire/paraphernalia/symbol that displays a logo or other message promoting alcohol or controlled substances, violence, or illegal activities may not be worn or brought on campus. 

Clothing accessories and jewelry shall be free of writing, pictures, symbols, or any other insignia that are crude, vulgar, profane, obscene, libelous, slanderous, or sexually suggestive. Clothing, accessories, or jewelry that degrade any cultural, religious, or ethnic values, presents a safety hazard, or that advocate racial, ethnic, or religious prejudice or discrimination are prohibited. 

The administration has the final word on appropriate clothing. The school dress code applies to all school functions on or off campus. Teachers are charged with the responsibility of enforcing student dress code in their classes, hallways, and within campus boundaries. Administration and other school personnel share the same responsibility. Teaches shall follow school procedure for discipline referral regarding dress code infractions.

Dress Code Infractions Procedure: 
1. First period teacher determines if student’s clothing is a dress code violation. 
2. Teacher requests student change into student’s alternative attire or the office will provide alternative attire. 
3. Teacher contacts office to request parents be informed and asked to provide alternative attire. 
4. Parent will bring alternative attire or pick up the student to take home for changing their clothing, and returning them back to school as soon as possible. 
Open Campus

The Happy Camp High School has an “Open Campus” during lunch time only. This means that students may not leave campus at any other time without an off-campus pass, including before school and between classes. Also when students are off campus during lunch they are under the jurisdiction of school rules and Ed. Code, just as if they were on campus.


Each student is issued a locker for his/her personal use as a privilege and is responsible for its appearance and condition. Students are advised not to share lockers or exchange lock combinations. The school does not guarantee the security of items in lockers, nor does it assure any liability for such security.

Student Vehicles

Vehicles shall be parked in designated areas. Students are not to go to their cars during or between classes unless granted permission. The privilege of bringing vehicles on campus may be suspended.

Driving/ Parking on Campus

Driving onto the Happy Camp High School campus is a privilege (not a right) that can be taken away, for cause, at any time. Students must drive safely and park appropriately on campus.


All visitors must report to the office. Parents are always welcome to visit classes. Stop by the office and sign in to receive your pass. Persons other than parents will not be allowed to visit classes unless authorized by the principal.


Skateboarding, bicycling, roller blading, roller skating and foot scooters are strictly prohibited on school grounds.

Internet and Email Use

Access to the information service may be denied and you may be subject to disciplinary action.

Misuse can come in many forms, but it is commonly viewed as any message(s) sent or received that indicate or suggest pornography, unethical or illegal solicitation, racism, sexism, inappropriate language, and other issues.

The use of the information system is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges. The administration, staff, or faculty of Siskiyou Union High School District may request that the site administrator deny, revoke, or suspend specific user accounts.
